چکیده

We demonstrate that, together with the available experimental information , chiral symmetry determines the low energy behaviour of the ππ scattering amplitude to within very small uncertainties. In particular, the threshold parameters of the S–, P –, D– and F –waves are predicted, as well as the mass and width of the ρ and of the broad bump in the S–wave. The implications for the coupling constants that occur in the effective La-grangian beyond leading order and also show up in other processes, are discussed. Also, we analyze the dependence of various observables on the mass of the two lightest quarks in some detail, in view of the extrapo-lations required to reach the small physical masses on the lattice. The analysis relies on the standard hypothesis, according to which the quark condensate is the leading order parameter of the spontaneously broken symmetry. Our results provide the basis for an experimental test of this hypothesis, in particular in the framework of the ongoing DIRAC experiment: The prediction for the lifetime of the ground state of a π + π − atom reads τ = (2.90 ± 0.10) 10 −15 sec.

Regge Analysis of Pion-pion (and Pion-kaon) Scattering for Energy S

We perform a detailed Regge analysis of NN , πN and ππ scattering. From it, we find expressions that represent the ππ scattering amplitudes with an accuracy of a few percent, for exchange of isospin zero, and ∼ 15% for exchange of isospin 1, and this for energies s > 1.4GeV and for momentum transfers |t| < ∼ 0.4GeV. These Regge formulas are perfectly compatible with the low energy (s ∼ 1.4GeV) ...

Wigner-cusp in Kaon Decays and Determination of Ππ Scattering Lengths

In the last few years it has become possible to study low energy ππ scattering in kaon decays to three pions, thanks to the high statistics measurement of K → πππ decays performed by the NA48/2 experiment at the CERN SPS. At the ππ threshold, the ππ mass spectrum exhibits a Wigner-cusp, from which the S-wave ππ scattering lengths are extracted with high precision. This measurement is complement...

F - 13288 Marseille – Cedex 9 Electromagnetic Corrections to Low - Energy π − π Scattering †

Electromagnetic corrections to the low-energy π+π− → π0π0 scattering amplitude at next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion are reviewed. Their effects on the corresponding scattering lengths are estimated and compared to the two-loop strong interaction contributions. Key-Words: Chiral perturbation theory, Pion, Electromagnetic corrections. Contribution to the Eighth International Symposium...

Determination of the S - wave ππ scattering lengths from a study of K ± → π ± π 0 π 0 decays

We report the results from a study of the full sample of ∼ 6.031 × 10 K → πππ decays recorded by the NA48/2 experiment at the CERN SPS. As first observed in this experiment, the ππ invariant mass (M00) distribution shows a cusp-like anomaly in the region around M00 = 2m+, where m+ is the charged pion mass. This anomaly has been interpreted as an effect due mainly to the final state charge excha...

Low energy dynamics and the ππ scattering lengths from the NA48/2 experiment at CERN

The observation of a cusp-like structure in the M00 invariant mass distribution in the decay K ± → π±π0π0 by the NA48/2 experiment at CERN has given a renewed interest in the ππ scattering lengths. We report the result of a study of a partial sample of 2.3 × 10 decays, the observation of an anomaly in the ππ mass spectrum in the region around M00 = m+, where m+ is the mass of the charged pion, ...
